In a Progress Report exclusive, I reveal that 20% of private nursing agency placements at public Alberta Health Services facilities were in the Calgary and Edmonton areas. This is noteworthy, because agency nurses are intended to fill gaps in remote areas.

At Alberta Native News, I wrote about an agreement Owl River Métis Community entered to build three solar power plants on its territory on the northeastern shore of Lac La Biche, which got picked up by CTV News and the Hamilton Spectator, courtesy of the Local Journalism Initiative.

I also reported on several Treaty 6 First Nations’ efforts to get a federal impact assessment ordered for Pathways Alliance’s $16.5-billion carbon sequestration network, including Cold Lake First Nations, whose chief says he’s planning to intervene in the Alberta government’s court challenge against the Impact Assessment Act on the side of the feds.

Friend of the Orchard Scott Martin listed this newsletter as one of his recommended independent media outlets to support, so I’m returning the favour. If you like the work I do here, you’ll love the Catch.

On that note, Rachel Gilmore—who’s done groundbreaking work as Canada’s leading short-form video journalist—recently got laid off from her job. If you’re an Orchard subscriber with some extra cash lying around, you should consider supporting Rachel’s work on Substack. She’s got big things planned for 2025.
