Hey folks,
Sadly, my time as The Sprawl’s Calgary city hall reporter is coming to an end after October. In order to keep doing the work I enjoy, I bring you The Orchard — my upcoming twice-weekly newsletter.
This newsletter will offer a combination of analysis, opinion and original reporting, all from a staunch, unapologetic progressive perspective that is unsparing in holding the powerful to account. Wednesday newsletters will focus on Calgary and Alberta politics, while Fridays will cover national and international issues.
Launching The Orchard allows me to continue doing the work I’ve done at The Sprawl — with perhaps a harder edge — while covering other issues I haven’t previously had the chance to in more depth than a tweet offers. I will continue to live tweet from Calgary City Council meetings, as well.
Posting will be sporadic while I’m still employed at The Sprawl, but come Nov. 1, I will have a newsletter ready by 5 p.m. MT on Wednesday and 3 p.m. MT on Fridays.
I hope to have my first piece published next week to give you a taste of what’s to come.
It’s quite daunting going solo, but if you like the work I’ve done at The Sprawl, as well as outlets like Passage, the Progress Report and Jacobin, you’ll no doubt appreciate what I have in store for this space.
But in order to make an independent journalism career sustainable, I need to get paid. So if you like my work, please help me keep doing it. If you can donate $5 a month I would greatly appreciate it. If not, no worries — the newsletter is still free!
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t use this opportunity to plug both my podcasts — the Forgotten Corner and Big Shiny Takes.
Anyway, stay tuned to your inbox and I’ll be in touch soon. Thanks for your support!
