My partner was one of the petition signature gatherers........and I am proud to oppose coal mining on our eastern slopes. Those slopes are where every river on the Canadian plains rises, and they need intact trees and uncleared slopes to hold that water and release it gradually over the season. Otherwise, you get floods in the spring, and droughts by August. As climate change proceeds, having enough water for agriculture and people's needs is going to be tricky...........we don't need our watersheds stripped and degraded for a 1% royalty from Australia, or anywhere else.
We need forested eastern slopes, clean water and healthy trout streams going forward. Coal has to be history........its a dirty fossil fuel, not an economic opportunity for anyone.
Ingamarie is quite correct. A pristine Eastern Slopes is not a nice thing to have, it's a necessity. And I say this as someone who couldn't sign Corb's petition because I live in B.C., on Vancouver Island. The corporate types (often, but not always, foreign) and their Canadian sycophants need to be held in check and the people of Alberta need to tell their political 'masters' in Edmonton to get on with it!
The trouble with Alberta is how convinced the hard heads are that continued fossil fuel extraction will keep us advantaged.......even though most of the easy to extract stuff is long gone. Boosters don't follow the details, they just clip the coupons, as my socialist father used to say.
Turning the earth into money works for those who don't live anywhere close to the actual earth......turning arable land into real estate is another favourite game that is currently working for them. The Carney government is shutting down agricultural research stations in western Canada, while getting on National TV to brag about greenhouse projects designed for year round plant growth for food security.
Who needs a liveable planet when we have these 'smart boys' working 24-7 to free us from anything resembling natural law???? Data centres in space, and greenhouses on the Tundra....all brought to our grandkids by Fossil Fuels/Fools! What could go wrong???
