Aligning pension fund investments with UNDRIP is beneficial towards the climate, both environmental and business, according to the charity that produced the report.
These are legitimate criticisms, and an argument can be made for reforming most, if not all, pension plans. However, I seriously question the tactical wisdom of going after the CPP at this critical moment when the UCP is threatening to to take the money and run!!!.
Of course the UCP would (THEY tell us) put the money into a new shiny Alberta Pension Plan!
Given how, in the past, our public sector plans have been mismanaged, the chances the UCP intends to increase support for either the environment or First Nations are slim to none and (as they say) "Slim has left town"!!!
I understand that concern, but Shift is looking at existing pension plans’ investment policies, not the hypothetical investment policies of an even worse pension plan that may or may not come into existence at some point in the future.
We can support the idea of a Canada Pension Plan while criticizing its shortcomings, just as we can support the CBC while criticizing it.
And the report doesn’t single out the CPP; it looks at 10 others, including AIMCo.
